IELTS Reading

What is the purpose of reading as an activity? In my opinion is for getting some knowledge about something we like. I'm pretty sure that nobody in this world, except probably the news guys presenters, is not forced to read something against time, even if we have to memorize something or if we have to learn something from a certain text. For this type of activity, everybody is setting the time, depending on his own collecting capacities of information. So, why is this task against time?

  1. Whats the point learning to read when they want us to simply scan and skim through it for answers

  2. My suggestion with this is to send all these problems concerning this exam directly to the House of Commons, They have already received complaints regarding these exams from fluent English speakers with proof of their good skills in English from other sources, therefore inconsistent with the test's results.

    They can be contacted here:
    http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/standards-and-interests/pcfs/contact-us/

Also, it would be important to request feedback under the Data protection Act 1998, specially if there are concerns that there could be something fishy going on.

IELTS have created a system for failing people and making money, specially in the reading part, where they can apply very subjective criteria. Moaning wont stop them and they are becoming stronger and stronger, therefore the UK parliament must be aware of this circumstance.

  3. I strongly disagree. It's pretty logical to expect from the person to be able to read and understand a text of particular complexity in particular limited time.

I took two such tests: IELTS and some test at local university (test B), and what bothered me, the logic of some questions in IELTS test was too vague. I could not be sure if I answer correctly or not even if I understood the text and the question completely. For the same complexity of the texts and questions, no such problems for "test B".

I took some official preparation course conducted by IELTS tester and when I and other people complained a number of times that the expected answer is logically not much correct, we were told that we need to learn the special logic of IELTS to succeed. I have B.Sc. in mathematics - why in hell the tutor of IELTS will teach me logic? Why in hell should I adapt myself to IELTS perversions to pass English tests?

  5. Today (09.01.2016) the IELTS for UKVI organisers reached the peak of their malice. Passage nr 2 (out of three) for the Academic module ("ants learning process") was on the PhD level and I'm absolutely sure than less then a 0.00000001% of the English native language speakers could comprehend what it was about. Cambridge fascists' desire to complicate the test has brought it to the stage of absurdity.

  6. I am 50 years old, and was born and raised in America. I visit the UK quite often, have taught high school English for 7 years, and work as a nurse on a Cardiac floor (17 years and counting), and feel I have command of the English language. I took the IELTS in America for the purpose of working for a Travel Nursing company in the UK. The prospective company I am applying with told me that "as long as you work in an English-speaking hospital, you will have no problem passing the test." However, I still studied all the material I could get my hands on, printed every sample test, and took them all. Even though the test was much harder than I had anticipated, I never thought for a moment that I would not pass. Today I received my scores and was totally shocked. The overall score was an 8.0, having received an 8.5 in both Listening and Writing, and a 9.0 in Speaking. My Reading score was the lowest at 6.5. The company requires that I get a 7.0 in EACH category meaning I have failed this test. I do not feel this test adequately represents whether somebody can speak, understand, and write in the English language. It simply does not!! I am not a scholar by any means, however I do have two college degrees, have lived and worked in the United States for 50 years, and am quite capable of communicating in English. Incidentally, in a room of approximately 60 applicants, the staff administering the test was surprised to see I had an American passport (remember, I tested in Florida.) When I asked why that was odd, he stated that I was the ONLY AMERICAN testing that day. Now I ask......how can the only American PROFICIENT IN ENGLISH, among a room of foreigners NOT HAVE PASSED AN ENGLISH TEST. This test cost $240 to take, and will cost an additional $240 to RETEST simply because their scoring criteria put me below a 7.0. This test needs to be investigated. We must take some random scoring criteria at their word that the test was even scored adequately. And even if it WAS scored adequately, then the format needs to be rewritten. If somebody like me cannot pass this test, something is MAJORLY wrong.
