IELTS Writing

The situation at writing is similar to the one at speaking. Why the hell you have to describe a situation in a minimum of 150 words, when you can describe it in just 50? ...And this could be a situation that anybody could handle if the theme would have something to do with reality, but no, you ain't get that. You get the most stupid and the most unrealistic situation that you could think, like me.
"You are moving to another country and you have some furniture that you'd like to give to a friend. Write a letter to your friend and tell him what kind of furniture do you have, why would he like it and what means of transportation he needs to get it"
How's that? I bet everybody meets this kind of situation at list 4 or 5 times per year. ...And when you actually meet it, what would you do? In the speed and communications edge we live in, you write a letter. Yeah right!

exactly, are they expecting the candidate to write non sense for the rest of 100 words??

  2. My suggestion with this is to send all these problems concerning this exam directly to the House of Commons, They have already received complaints regarding these exams from fluent English speakers with proof of their good skills in English from other sources, therefore inconsistent with the test's results.

    They can be contacted here:
    http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/standards-and-interests/pcfs/contact-us/

Also, it would be important to request feedback under the Data protection Act 1998, specially if there are concerns that there could be something fishy going on.

IELTS have created a system for failing people and making money, specially in the reading part, where they can apply very subjective criteria. Moaning wont stop them and they are becoming stronger and stronger, therefore the UK parliament must be aware of this circumstance.

  3. Preparing for this test for me was mainly training my ability to invent circumstances, feelings, to be creative - all this to be able to squeeze out the expected text. All that was a fun, but was nothing to do with my English knowledge.

I also found the time allocated for writing two essays very limited - I needed to train myself at home to write in time and that was pretty hard task, there was not much time to think over what I am going to write and it was really a kind of sport activity. There was no place for mistake - if you choose a wrong path in developing the topic and realize it too late, you are lost.

  4. My husband has just got 9, 9, 8.5 and 7.5 in writing. He has failed to get points for permanent residency visa for Australia!! He is British, and a highly skilled nurse, been working down under for over 3 years on sponsor visa?? How does that work? I will be writing to Local MP and local paper.

    1. If native speaker(especially an educated adult) can't get a perfect score on the test, that means that there's something really wrong with the testing system.

  6. Writing part is the worst, because it doesn't test your knowledge of English, which is what IELTS is supposed to do, but rather your writing skills according to standards define by the people who developed IELTS, I mean if you don't follow the required structure(introduction, overview, paragraph A, B etc) they will deduct your marks! This is ludicrous, screw this test, really.

  11. "You just bought a piece of technology. Write a letter to your friend explaining what the piece is, how do you like it, and explain why your friend should buy it as well."

I really wasn't expecting to become a salesperson.

Anyway, 1 hour for writing a bloated letter and an essay on a "hot" topic is definitely not enough.

Won't give any more money to IELTS mafia, for sure.

  15. This exam sucks big time. I just got the results from my second attempt. My writing score went south big time, while the others went up. It just doesn't make any sense to me. I am starting to think the person grading the exam did not like my opinion on the topic, and punished me because of it. I do not want to give this people any more of my hard earned money. It is very frustrating.
